Ever seen one of those pictures where a person is lolling on a beach, nursing a drink, hanging out with friends or generally having fun and they titled it "chilling things" or some variant form of the last word?
It is cool to chill. The brain needs it, the body system demands it, medical science advocates it and common sense (the mere fact that you will not live for ever, and there will always be demand on time and resource) echoes it.
Chilling is meant to be time away from the grind, from the regular... It is supposed to be a time to let down your hair, refresh and recharge.
The issues arise when chilling becomes an end (in and of itself).
Many chilling things (pun intended) have been done by people in the bid to reach the level of comfort that allows them to continually 'chill'.
A song took the Nigerian entertainment scene by storm a short while ago. It was talking about those who want to bam-ba and chill with the big boys.
Most persons concentrated on this part of the song. They paid little attention to the lines that follow: You dey run kiti-kiti, you dey run kata-kata.
That imagery is that of a person not at peace: running here and there for some reason, chasing something or being chased.
Crimes have been committed, lives cut short, families ruined and society is worse off because we have taken what is meant to be an interlude and made it the whole programme.
Chill!
There is more to life than just chilling being chill. A life of impact and contribution, for instance.
Welcome to your future!
