Many persons have fallen prey to housebreakings/burglaries.
Under the criminal code, both crimes consist of three elements:
- A person entering
- A building, occupied structure, or separately secured portion thereof
- A purpose to commit a crime therein
Whilst, technically, housebreaking occurs in the day and burglary happens at night, both can be targeted or opportunistic.
Here are tips to preventing housebreaking and burglaries:
° Never leave doors and windows open
Even when just crossing the street to get something, lock all doors and windows (and double check afterwards) before leaving.
° Change passcodes on electronic locks and garage doors from time to time
As a rule, everytime you have people over to do some repairs, change locks afterwards.
° Never advertise when you will be away.
That is just you painting a bullseye on your back and not expecting pot shots to be taken at you.
° Have someone check your house while you are away
This creates the impression of occupancy (especially if the lights around the structure get turned on and off at the usual intervals..
° Use strong locks and keys
Put some money into making it hard for people to make away with your property.
° Install physical security systems
From strong lights to alarms and motion detectors, even CCTV, physical security measures that deter or detect are good-to-haves that ratchet up the odds in your favour.
