So much ado has been made about how people need others to survive and succeed (because of the support structure they provide) that it has become a challenge.
While humans are social and interconnection affects speed and direction of travel, it is crucial to recognize that relationships are escalators (either taking you up or down).
And that is where the rubber meets the road: what kind of affiliations do you have? The people you hang out with are a picture of your future, not your present. The reason is as your minds interact, you become alike.
Therefore, be deliberate about the people you do life with. Not everyone is heading your way.
Thus:
~ Decide who you should roll with
You do not need to know everyone or be their friend. Be friendly. Yet, choose your circle. Restrict it to those who look like, or are heading to the future you desire.
~ Do not sustain what does not work
Associations are not for life. Ideology and principles, more than emotions, should drive who you hang around. So, you can move people from the outer to the inner circle and vice versa.
~ Dispense value
Nobody appreciates parasites. It will be in your interest to bring value to the table. It may not be as much as the next fellow brings but by all means do not only receive, also give. Else, you get to the point where the goodwill account is overdrawn.
