I used to complain about how I worked so hard and got paid so little.
I used to join other colleagues to say that others who were direct staff and better paid were not working as much as we were.
I used to believe and profess that I could do their job without any hassles but that they would have difficulty doing mine.
I used to hear others say that they did not even understand the value in paying them so well.
I used to do all of that and some.
Then I got into a role that required more of brain effort than physical exertion.
Then I got into being involved in developing processes, tactics, monitoring implementation and such.
Then I got to realize that closing hours are elastic when your day-end is decided by output not the arrival of the next shift.
Then I got to understand that when your work is mental, you never really shutdown.
Then I got to see that mental workload can be quite heavy.
Then I saw, surprisingly, that many who want the perks are not willing to pay the (upskilling) price.
As you must have surmised, something prompted this post (if you term it rant, it is fine, too). A conversation with a friend was the trigger.
There is no work that is not taxing, brainwork just happens to rate more than brawn-work (on that scale) and rewards better.
If you want it, go for it.
Welcome to your future!
