Mini Muggings Manual

Once a gentleman was walking along the road, minding his business and conversation with the person on the other end of the line. Suddenly, he was dealt a stinging slap on the cheek. He started in surprise at the attack. As he was turning to understand what happened and why, his assailant grabbed his mobile phone and took off.

Mugging refers to quick, violent robbery of an individual, usually in a public place. Muggings occur in every city and hood, in different forms at different times. You, or someone you know, may have even been a victim.

What steps can you take to reduce your susceptibility?

• Stay alert, stay aware

Dropping your guard has done half the job for any would-be mugger. Getting lost in what you are doing makes you a sitting duck. Query every movement towards you, be mentally ready for flight and fight at anytime.

• Stay in control

Look people in the eye. Walk confidently. Project the image of one who can handle him/herself (and others). It makes a potential mugger think twice before coming for you. In most instances, criminals prefer soft targets.

• Stay paired

The buddy system is a good insurance policy. Assailants are quicker to attack folks who are alone. Take your walk, run or biking in the company of others. There is safety in travelling in packs.

• Stay prepped

Anticipate a worst case scenario and have something at the ready to defend yourself with martial art skills, pepper spray, knife...whatever can introduce the element of surprise that swings things in your favour.

• Stay informed

Know areas prone to muggings and avoid such. Prevention is preferred in all instances to palliatives.

Stay safe, stay secure!
