Dear Manager (Staff Worth Keeping)

Dear Manager,

How is the work of coordinating and leading human resource going? I know there are days when it is tough.

That is why I am writing you this; to make your task just a bit easier. Permit me to point out some attributes to look out for in staff that you should keep and not let go. Which, of course, suggests that there are some people in your organization that the earlier they leave or change the better for all concerned.

Keep your eye peeled for any member of staff that does the following:
✓Respects Time
Whether it is appointments or deadlines, they have a healthy appreciation for time (and others schedules) and generally work within agreed timelines. That is a keeper.
✓Exhibits Reliability
Anyone who has shown time and again with tasks and interpersonal dealings that they can be relied on is one you do now want to let slip away.
✓Takes Initiative
As hard as it is to find people who can execute tasks and projects well, those who can initiate things are scarcer. Many employees just take what has been handed down and follow it religiously or make it harder to implement.
✓Displays Ownership
This should be number one. Most staff see themselves as employees who are there for the service they provide. If you come across those ones who think of themselves as stakeholders, keep them, treat them well and see to their growth. Most of the ideas and drive to push the frontiers will come from them.

So, take a long, hard look at the people you work with. Which ones do you need to have a drink with? Which ones do you need to have a hard conversation with?

Welcome to your future!
