Access Control Fundamentals

Access control is a critical part of physical and technical security. It is concerned with managing ingress and egress as well as access to a company's facility and resources.

In order to have a working and effective access control system, there are two bits that you should consider:

One - the system to be employed.
How much of physical barriers will be deployed? How much of it will rely on technology? To what extent will human manning be utilized? Will the system be fully or partially automated?

Two - the interaction of the system with people who access the facility.

This will cover two categories of persons...

Staff: what level of access should personnel who work in the organization have? One card with access to everywhere? Or will there be general areas and restricted areas (only accessible to those who work there and those who have the necessary clearance)?

Visitors: will their cards be physically different from those of personnel? What places can their cards access? How will they be managed? Is there a process for booking them in? Will they be chaperoned? How is the end-of-visit loop handled?

By the time you have answered these questions, you will, at least, have an access control process in place (even where you are unable you to implement all the elements captured here).
