Burnout \ˈbərn-ˌau̇t \ is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when stress and exhaustion is not resolved but instead accumulates.

Burnout is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced feelings of personal accomplishment. It may comprise emotional exhaustion, physical fatigue, and cognitive weariness.

What can cause it?
  • Constant pressure
  • Tying performance to self-worth
  • Perfectionism and pessimism
  • Role conflict and ambiguity
  • Insufficient reward
  • Lack of control

What can you do?
  • Work at a sustainable pace
  • Give yourself and others reasonable targets
  • Cut yourself some slack
  • Get other validators aside performance
  • Leave a margin for human error
  • See the good in things and people
  • Be clear on what is expected of a task/role
  • Ask questions
  • Encourage and commend good/hard work
  • Develop healthy habits (sleep, exercise, unwind, sports, vacations)

It is important to note that the negative effect of burnout spills over to every area of one’s life and can cause long-term changes to the body that can make a person vulnerable to illnesses.
