20 has not produced many good movies, no thanks to Covid-19. In the midst of all that, The Old Guard dropped...a welcome development.
This is not tooting the horn for it, or anything like that. This is about lessons gleaned from that flick.
One: You did not ask for or endow yourself with the gifts you carry.
Whether you believe in a higher power or not, there has to be some purpose to the abilities you possess. Even where it is not clear (to you) use them to enrich humanity.
Two: People will misunderstand you.
What humankind cannot comprehend it either reveres or persecutes. The latter is easier than the former. Know that it did not start with you: it will not end with you.
Three: You are not alone.
There will always be someone, somewhere, who operates at the same wavelength as you. It may take time but they will show up. Sometimes, when you least expect it.
Four: Take someone under your wing; help them become.
Reduce another's travel-time. Aid them to come into their own, with less hurdles to jump. Even when they don't get it, stay with them till it becomes clear.
Five: Do not be afraid to let people explore.
In the midst of all that coaching, it is okay to pull back and let them spread their wings. It is part of becoming.
Six: There will be those who want what you've got.
The very things that you think are a burden, are being coveted by some (for various reasons). They may be willing to go to great lengths to dispossess you of them.
Seven: People will betray you.
Those without will find the Fifth Column in your ranks. Those who are supposed to be on your team could for differing reasons work at cross-purposes...
Eight: Make allowance for folks to misbehave.
Hold yourself to the highest ethical standards but allow room for people to fall short. Equally importantly, forgive those shortcomings. Hope for more but expect less. Deal with folks by the heart, not the head.
Nine: Fight for what you believe in.
Be it your convictions, team, friends or some other thing. Do not let it come crashing down without a fight.
Ten: We will all die.
That is not the point. What matters is what you do with the life you have. Death will come when it will, make your days count.
You might want to see the movie. You just might see other things there.
Welcome to your future!
