Norms, Patterns & Culture

If there is one thing that is stronger than the vision that drives any organization, it is the culture of that establishment.

That stems from the norms and patterns of behaviour reinforced (by the leadership of the organization). For, whatever is rewarded gets repeated and whatever is frowned at, is forced under (to either atrophy or continue in a modified form).

What cultural nuances drive your organization? What behavioural patterns are the norm? They affect the attitude of personnel and, by extension, performance, productivity and profitability (where applicable).

Also important is the fact that behaviour and the systemic preconditions that drive them cause mistakes and repeat mistakes. Most organizations treat mistakes and move on. It is time to begin to see that mistakes are often indicators that some basic things are out of place.

In that case, what norms or patterns create the enabling environment for errors to flourish? This is where an objective, clinical deep dive is advisable.
Are there:
- preconditions that dispose people to act in a certain way?
- error-enforcing conditions?
- unwritten consequences that govern behaviour?
- opportunities to err and use them as learning curves?
- feelings of safety that allow people to be themselves?

Note that no organization can go higher than the culture that drives it. If you do not like your outcomes, it might be time to x-ray your norms, patterns and culture.

Welcome to your future!
