iNNOCENCE

We had each other
Soul-knit, companions and play mates
After a fashion, bed mates
Acquainted, bee and flower; yet not intimate

Through childhood
Quinine and honey coloured times in the 'hood
Days of endless sunlight
Stories and wisdom from ancient lips by twilight

Coming of age
That illusion of independence long waited
Hatching, wings unfurled
A sage, newly born, set for flight

Worlds to be conquered
Experiences, alien and forbidden, to be mastered
Juices overflowing
For what it knew not; body and soul ready, yearning

I tested
I tasted
Lost it
It was innocence.
