Securing your premises involves three elements: (presented as 3Ds) deterrence, delay and detection.
Deterrence involves the steps taken to discourage intruders from gaining access: (CPTED) design, CCTV, perimeter fencing, guards, dogs, access control, patrols etc.
Delay comes in handy when a determined criminal has circumvented measures meant to discourage. It then becomes essential to delay access into the facility. This can be achieved through fences, alarms, pressure-triggered spotlights etc.
Detection entails all the steps taken to uncover the people (and methods) involved in the execution of a crime. This stage is an admission that the system was exploited. And a means to recover its integrity and what was taken.
In securing your asset, do not overlook the 3Ds.
Stay secure!
