Crime is a fact of life.
In the hierarchy of controls, the first option is elimination. Followed by substitution and controls.
Crime cannot be eliminated. And if you are thinking substitution, what will you use in its place? Crime can only be curbed or reduced. How? Through the use of controls. Whether engineering or administrative controls, the whole idea is to ratchet down your susceptibility.
What then can you do:
~Realise that crimes can occur anytime, anywhere
In some instances, they are not premeditated but opportunity presents itself and mates with intent and voila... Mental preparedness, therefore, can be the differentiating factor.
~Decide not to be a victim
Before you ever get in the space where you are in dire straits, make up your mind (that as much as lies in your power) you will not get there.
~Work the decision
There are a number of things you will have to do: look at your physical security, online security, lifestyle, people around you, activities and other things that can serve as exposures. Then deliberately begin to close the avenues through which you are open to the perpetration of a crime.
~Own and deploy helpful resources
There are institutions and persons to turn to when your best efforts fall short. Do you know them? Are they accessible to you? Stretch it, will they recognise you if you called in distress or someone called them on your behalf?
Read through again and self-evaluate your position.
Stay secure!
