Handling Fear

It was Franklin D. Roosevelt that said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” This year, do not let fear rule over you as you chase your dreams, come what may. Will negative situations arise? Sure. You can rest assured that some of the people you banked on will fail you, deals you thought sealed will come unglued and things you did not bargain for (good or bad) will happen.

When ‘it’ hits the fan and it is difficult to see your way through, adopt Jesse Jackson’s position, “At the end of the day, we must go forward with hope and not backward by fear and division.” Just keep putting one leg in front of the other, when you look back you will be amazed how far you have come. You have all the courage you will ever need in you already. As Mark Twain said, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.”

So, when the sky is falling…
¾     Imagine a worst-case scenario
¾     Check the previous against the reality
¾     If there is a differential that is fine (perfect is Utopia)

Here is how to handle fear:
  • Believe HIM (God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind).
  • Call time out’s
  • Create safe places
  • Do it afraid (Face That Giant)
  • Reward little victories, please
Nelson Mandela said, “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

Every person has a GIANT in them, the challenge is that most people focus on the last three letters and see only the ANT. You, however, are different. Right? Great! If ‘it’ came your way, it is because you have all that is required to triumph.

As Dale Carnegie observed, “Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.”

Welcome to your future!
