Worker Loyalty

Had some thoughts around loyalty in the work place chasing themselves around in my head. Permit me to share.

When most leaders and managers in organizations talk about loyalty, the concept they have is that of devoted, productive employees who contribute their quota for as long as is reasonably practicable.

That is the reason for the plaques, gold wristwatches and other prizes that are awarded for long service. Arguably, it is the same reasoning behind pensions: appreciation for all those years of service.

For a large percentage of people in paid employment today, this definition of loyalty no longer holds true.

What motivates these days are conditions of service, opportunities for growth and experience or leverage that can be gained.

When today's employees think of loyalty, it is in terms of contributing optimally to the organization and not sabotaging it until they (are ready to) move on to something more rewarding.

If you want your organization to attract and retain the right personnel, you want to start with redefining worker loyalty.
