Invaders

 There was no warning.

Movies and books had convinced the world that when the aliens came, if ever, they'd send advance ships and such.

They did not.

One moment folks were going about their businesses, the next white, hot rays of plasma were raining from the stratosphere. They liquified everything they touched.

In less than an hour, half the world's population and cities were one gigantic sea of glassy liquid.

Two years into their rule, over humankind, a little child in Africa made an accidental discovery. The invaders in their true form were like earthworms.

They reacted in the same way to salt.

The news got out.

The remainder of humanity employed all means possible to deliver salt to the aliens.

By the third year, the remaining outworlders  beat a retreat. Water, the reason they came was now useless to them.

The survivors rejoiced.

It took only a few days to realize there was a shortage of fresh water on earth.
