The end of the year typically brings with it an upsurge in travel activities. 2020 is no different. The novel coronavirus, second wave and all, does not seem to have changed that.
What this means is that travel activities will likely impact on you, even if you are not travelling.
This post is about what can you do to promote your safety and well-being, whether you are travelling or not.
1-Plan your trip
Do not wake up and embark on a trip. Plan...duration, means of transport, route, stopovers (if any), transport and accommodation (you especially do not want to leave those to chance).
2-Share your itinerary with a trusted person
Please note: not with the whole world (that is an exposure). The notion is so that the person can check up on you and who or what (you leave behind) while you are away.
3-Travel light
Do not pack everything you can, you are not relocating, are you? The less luggage you have, the less you have to manage, the easier it is to get around and the less of a soft target you become.
4-Carry only essentials
That would refer to means of identification, passport and visa (where applicable) and preferably one card for expenses. Do not rule out the chance of getting mugged or worse being taken (depending on where you are going). Reduce potential losses.
5-Stay away from hotspots & flashpoints
Do due diligence. Find out and avoid routes and places known for criminal activities.
6-Use a fit vehicle
If you will travel by road (at any point) use vehicles in top condition. Whether that means fixing yours or hiring or calling a cab, make sure the vehicle is fit and functional.
7-Spend cautiously
Do not carry large amounts of cash; do not spend large amounts of cash. When you shop, do your thing and walk away. You do not need to make a statement.
8-Factor in external dynamics
Recognize that other people's events and activities will impact upon yours. Make room for that (in your planning and execution). Explore ways to lessen their effect on you.
Stay safe!
