The reason for the trip was defined: pay last respects to a fallen colleague. Their bus was driving into the venue of the interment when his eyes chanced on her.
Once the vehicle came to a stop, he all but ran after her. His efforts were rewarded with a phone number.
That was the start.
Two months later, they were inseparable.
By the sixth month, he called it quits. She was a boss who fed off being in control.
And then they met again, after a year, at a wedding. They said hi. Something about her seemed different. Curiosity got better of him. He suggested a drink. She said ice cream. He was shocked but he hid it.
Over strawberry and chocolate scoops they reconnected. This version was more mature, demure and considerate.
Over the next four months he studied her. By the fifth, he proposed. She accepted.
On the first night of the honeymoon, her phone buzzed while he was in the bathroom.
It was her twin. The one he'd originally fallen for. He did not know. It served her purposes.
