Whether you live in those parts of the world where owning an automobile is a simple matter or in some other climes where you'd have to plan and save up, nobody likes to lose their vehicle.
Yet, that risk is an ever-present one. People have parked their cars only to come out and it has disappeared or has been broken into and things asported.
Here are a few things to keep your car safe:
✓ Keep valuables out of sight
Laptops, phones, jewellery, cards (credit or debit), cash etc are negative advertisement. They draw unwarranted attention to the vehicle (and the owner). The vehicle could be vandalized or jacked --- that is, where that does not make you a target.
✓ Do not park in dark or secluded places
Park in well-lit places or places with plenty human or vehicular traffic. The more eyes can see it, the better for you.
✓ Lock doors with keys
For some brands of cars, using just the remote to lock the doors is as good as leaving it open (thieves use some magnetic contraptions to unlock them). It is advisable to lock doors with keys (in addition).
✓ Use steering/wheel locks
It is helpful to lock the steering when you are parking and might be gone for a while. That way, even if access is gained into the vehicle, the thief will have another layer of security to contend with. Wheel locks come in handy if the vehicle will be parked for an extended period.
✓ Install vehicle security
Not the type that refuses the car to move, you could be forced to deactivate it. Better is the type that allows the car move for a distance or amount of time then packs up (because some fundamental principle was breached).
✓ Insure the vehicle
If somehow the car still gets jacked, it is in your interest to have a cover that will replace it.
Stay secure!
