Many times experts share what you should and can do to prevent crime. But you and I know that there are days, when in spite of your best efforts, the criminal has the final say. So, what can you do when a thief or robber has entered your house? What can you do before then to reduce the impact of the visit?
• Car alarms can come in handy
If you hear movement in your premises, activating your car alarm could scare off the criminals.
• Hide valuables in unusual places
Drawers, under mattresses, pockets of clothes in the wardrobe...those are all the usual hiding places. Try, burying in a container of grain in the kitchen, or in the WC tank, dirty stockings in clothe basket, even the kennel... The bottom line is, anywhere that is not any of the usual places.
• By all means cooperate
When criminals have already gained access to your place, the worst things you can do are to be uncooperative or be a smart alec. It will only make the situation worse.
• Leave some cash and valuables in the regular places
It would be aggravating if criminals came to your house and found nothing to steal. Leave them enough that is in agreement with the social image portrayed by your neighbourhood, home and furnishings.
• Never run out of call credit
That would be bad for you if you needed to suddenly make a call for help wouldn't it?
• Activate already-in-place response measures
That presupposes you have some security apparatus you are latching unto (Neighbourhood Watch, Police, a neighbour who can reach out to Law Enforcement Agents/Agencies on your behalf.
The idea is simple: preempting increases preparedness. At the end, a lot will depend on your preparedness.
Stay secure!
