Most corporate organizations, even some non-profits have their own security arrangements. They either have security men on their payroll, as direct employees or they engage a contractor, who provides the men (and sometimes the infrastructure).
The reason is not farfetched, no one wants to take chances when it comes to securing themselves and their assets.
It is one thing to have a structure in place, it is another to make the most of it. How can you optimize the security configuration you currently have?
Let me share three key things:
• Attention
When you pay peanuts, you get monkeys for workers. In the same way, if your organization sees security as critical, it will get the right attention, budget and recognition. This will boost the morale and effectiveness of those whose work it is and increase leadership expectations and involvement/control.
• Training
Sans training, it is next to impossible to optimize security resources. The world is not static, crime is dynamic, security therefore should be fluid enough to respond to present day challenges. This is where training comes in handy. Train and retrain. Never assume it is enough.
• KPIs
What is not measured cannot be effectively rated. Provide objective matrices by which performance can be measured. It is these Key Performance Indicators that will show whether security resources are optimized or not.
