Credit and debit card crimes are rampant. Chances are that either you or someone you know has fallen victim.
What can you do to reduce your susceptibility to this vice? Here goes:
• Keep your cards safely (cards can be cloned)
• Do not use numbers that have any significance to you as PIN (birthdays, anniversaries, 1234 etc are no-no's)
• Protect your PINs (do not expose them: if you must write them down or save them on a device, make them part of a string of numbers)
• Accepting help from strangers at ATMs is not in your best interest
• Inspect card readers and area near PIN pad for anomalies
• Be certain that your debit alerts/notifications are functional
• Know the short codes and carelines you can use to shut down your account (and freeze withdrawals)
• If you lose your card, quickly block it (that way your funds are still safe regardless of what happens later)
• Be extra careful when shopping online, some sites are dummies for card skimming (card skimming is when details of your card are fraudulently obtained for criminal purposes)
Stay secure!
