Today, let me devote some attention to soft targets.
A Soft Target is a person or thing that is relatively unprotected or vulnerable, especially to attack. It is so called because it is undefended and easy to attack.
As opposed to hard targets, soft ones can even be the objects of opportunistic attacks and crimes.
Examples of soft targets are schools, hospitals and worship centres.
Let us zero-in on schools.
Schools, especially those for kids and teens are particularly vulnerable to attacks (both external and internal).
What can be done by way of target hardening?
✓Set up access control systems
People should not just walk in and out at their convenience.
✓Security gadgets
Install electronic and physical security equipment (cameras/CCTV, perimeter fences etc).
✓Security guards
Employ guards who will manage access control, patrol the grounds and generally deter crimes.
✓Sensitization
Hold awareness sessions for staff, students plus parents and training (even for security personnel) to bring everyone up to speed.
Stay secure!
