None of us chose when we were born. None of us gets to decide the hour of our death (suicides et al excluded, please). What we do have a say over is how the time between these two cataclysmic events are spent. We should choose and own how our lives are lived.
Why is this vital?
When a person's time is done, what is left behind are memories and their deeds. And those two make up the individual's legacy.
Everyday you live, you are building some sort of legacy. It will either be judged as worthy of celebration and emulation (like the Ghandhis and Martin Luther King Jrs of this world) or it is condemned or even vilified (hello Hitler). The point is, daily you are contributing to how you will be seen after you have left the scene.
If that is the case, and it is the case, it makes sense to be intentional about the process and the preferred outcome. Start with deciding what the latter should be and then work towards it.
Why should you bother, if this is most likely useful after you have passed on?
One: A good name can be better than gold.
Two: Your memory can be a blessing or a curse. It can open doors and bestow opportunities or it can work contrarily. You probably know a story or two of people who came into their own on the back of another's goodness or of those who experienced frustration due to nothing of their own making.
At the end, most of our actions in life, generate ripples that are felt after we are no more. What ripples are you generating?!
Welcome to your future!
