Saw this video the other day where a person entered a deserted reception area and making straight for the receptionist's handbag took a substantial sum from it.
The bits about a reception being without any occupant and a bag being left unattended were failures. But there was one thing that worked; a Closed Circuit TV.
Crime is a fact of life. Crime rarely makes announcements before occurring. Thus, to protect your company, worship centre or home, these three layers of protection are recommended.
First layer: awareness
Is every person up to speed on security and safety best practices? Security consciousness gives you an edge and impacts on the way you see and do things. For instance, you will not leave things that can attract attention, or may be asported, lying around. The key thing here is a mentality that does not let down its guard. Therefore, train and promote awareness.
Second layer: asset protection
Take steps to protect your assets. Hire guards, implement access control measures like cards, tags, scanning etc and other visible physical control measures. Also, deploy the not-so-visible ones like cameras and heat or pressure sensors that trigger alarms or failsafes.
Third layer: affiliation
Who you know and who can respond to you at a moment's notice can be the divider between on time help and belated reaponse. So, do you have resources that can be activated in an instant (of emergency)? Do you have any relationship with the people who provide this service? This may be unacknowledged, nevertheless, it is a factor in many things that have to do with humankind.
The idea behind this high-level summary is to present to you practices that will reduce your establishment's susceptibility to crime.
Stay secure!
