One of the most dangerous parts of a house is the kitchen.
This is because of the number of hazards that exist there (having potential to morph into incidents). For instance, there are knives, hot surfaces and liquids, fire, gas or kerosene etc.
Any of these, and others, can interact with people and have all sorts of consequences (ranging from near misses to major incidents or even fatality.
To increase safety around the kitchen:
• Eliminate - take out the hazards. Are there ways to remove those hazards from the kitchen environment?
• Substitute - replace the harzadous items with safer ones. Can intrinsically safer material be used?
• Reduce - bring down the likelihood of incidents by decreasing the hazards. Two ways: introduction of barriers & isolation. Will either push down the chances of an accident?
Accidents are costly. Embrace safety.
Stay safe!
